When you feel like rolling out some of the big guns, we’ve got all of the occasions covered with these 6 baller wines
NV Jo Landron ‘Atmospheres’ – Loire Valley (FRA) – A hand harvested, naturally fermented, low dosage bubbles that shows up many conventional and big name Champagnes for both quality and value. There’s racy citrus and fresh peachy fruit and lots of rocky, earthy complexity, all wrapped up in a deliciously bready texture.
’16 Achillee Riesling – Alsace (FRA) – A wonderful expression of natural Riesling. Green Apple, lemon, floral and slight kerosene.
’15 Domaine de Montille Saint – Romain ‘Le Jarron’ – Bourgogne (FRA) – Known for their great aromatic purity, always favouring balance and elegance over power and extraction. Classic white Burgundy, full of lemon, pineapple, green apple, citrus zest, a little stonefruit, medium bodied with good weight, grapefruit , mineralty, juicy-oily texture, wonderful balance and great acidity.
’14 Radikon Oslavje – Friuli-Venzia Giulia (ITA) – A famous Radikon blend of 40% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Grigio and 30% Sauvignon Blanc. All of Radikon’s whites are made in the same way: oragnically farmed, stunningly low yield, hand harvested fruit. 42 months in barrel and 18 months in a bottle, this orange wine is the epitome of structure and sophistication. Apple and dried fruit on the nose and palate, mineral and tannic in a serious elegant way. Copper golden in a glass, serious, savoury and outrageously expressive.
’17 By Farr ‘Sangreal’ Pinot Noir – Geelong (VIC) – The Sangreal vineyard was planted in 1994, making it the oldest vineyard for the Farrs. Plump strawberry, bergamot, clove and cinnamon, pencils, earth and vanilla, and a distinct kind of smoky Burgundy feel here. Juicy, strawberry and cherry, a whole lot of spice, plenty of tannin, though it’s silky smooth, tangy orange flavour, and a very long finish, with sour edged acidity trailing.
’17 Giaconda Estate Vineyard Shiraz – Beechworth (VIC) – Lifted, enticing and highly satisfying. A genial welcoming impact of lifted red to darker fruits laced with notes of clove, musk, and baked beetroot, underscored by a beguiling graphite minerality. A generous, rich and rounded palate. This has volume, showing seductive red plum fruit with a spicy edge underpinned by moreish powder fine tannins, voluptuous and silky on one level, savoury and mineral on another.
